Hi Gang, I know that Joe Schumacher, well known in the MBSI, has many
friends who are concerned for his current condition. Thanks to Jody
and Robbie, the MMD is the best way to keep many of Joe's friends
up-to-date. Let me summarize what has happened, since some of you have
not heard all the news.
About four weeks ago, Joe Schumacher suffered a severe stroke that left
him paralyzed on the entire right side of his body. Joe was unable to
speak understandably. After 10 days of minor recovery, Joe suffered
another stroke that was considered much lighter than the first.
However, he could no longer eat solid foods (his voice/throat muscles
were greatly affected) and his mild regimen of therapy was stopped.
After another 5 days, the therapy was restarted.
Each day of Joe's recovery has been a real roller coaster. He has been
fitted with a right leg brace so he can stand with support for a short
while.
I talked with Lenora, his loving wife, this evening and the report was
upbeat. Joe is starting to show some slight movement on his right side
and his speech is improving a little. The prognosis for short-term
recovery is "guarded." Although Lenora would like to have him home for
Christmas, that is unlikely, according to the doctors. Within a few
more weeks, if Joe continues to stay stable and/or improve, he will be
moved to a Therapy Facility nearer his home (just down the street from
us).
Joe and Lenora will continue to need the prayers of us all as he slowly
improves. If anyone would like to send a message to Joe, please reply
to my "open" e-mail account, <cotps@aol.com>. I have relayed nearly 100
messages to Joe thus far and he reads each one, when he feels well
enough to do so.
Thanks to each of you for your concern for our very dear, mutual
friend.
