Prices at St. Louis Auction 12 Nov 1998
By Werner Grunbaum

The following musical items were sold today at the Phillips-Selkirk
auction in St. Louis, Missouri. [Prices are US$]

**Buyer's commission of 15% is added to all listed prices.**

Lots 1058.1 to 1060: 3.5" to 4" cylinders: Mermod Freres and two
unknown firms. Fair condition, but playing. Teeth OK, but dampers
and tuning needed. $650, $650, & $500.

Lot 1061: Mermod Freres, 5.5" cylinder, 38 teeth. Restored.
Tune card. Excellent, Catalogue claims 8 tunes. Real nice box,
super tone. $1,100.

Lot 1063: Mermod Freres. two comb sublime harmonie, 8 tunes, 82 teeth.
Circa 1875, with hand crank, 11" cylinder. Great tone, tune card,
super nice. $2,100.

Lot 1064: Stella disk music box, 11 9.5" disks. Very nice tone and
excellent case. 1889. $3,300.

Lot 1065: Unknown mfr., butchered refinish job. Needs cleaning.
12 tunes, six bells, drum, and castanets. Tone quality could not
be judged because it played so slowly, Needed damper work. $1,800.

Lot 1066: F G Otto disk music box, single comb, eleven 15 3/4 " disks,
oak case. Case looked rough. Played fair. $3,500.

Lot 1067: Mermod Freres 'ideal concerta', three interchangeable
cylinders. Nice tone, pretty good looking case. 8 tunes, 2 cylinders
in storage drawer, plus cylinder in machine. Nice tone. Cylinders
were nickel plated?? Good working order. $6,250.

I saw no bargains here with perhaps one exception. My feeling was that
some of the boxes may have come from a collection because some of the
boxes were nicely repaired. Some had been repined and one had a broken
tooth fixed. Nice repairs. It was quite unusual to see so many music
boxes at a single auction in St. Louis, Mo.

To change the subject, I still haven't heard from anyone about my
Karl Diesner street organ. Does anyone know of another one in some
collection? Or can one of you find his name in some list? Any
information would be appreciated.

Happy music box hunting,

Werner Grunbaum
