Nowadays, MPEG level 3 (MPEG3 or mp3) audio file compression provides
very high quality sound from files that are much much smaller than .wav
files.
There are several freeware programs available to convert .wav files to
.mp3 files. You might try MP3box (a Windows 95 program) or BladeEnc
(a DOS command-line program), both of which can be obtained from
http://www.download.com/
The conversion from .wav to .mp3 is done entirely by the CPU, so
there's no need to upgrade your sound card to do this.
