Hi Friends! While we're on the subject of quality recordings of band
organs and other mechanical musical instruments, I'd like to mention
that list member (and friend :) Tom Grace produces possibly the finest
recordings of many instruments.
Particularly of Ken Smith's wonderful self-built replica 89-k Gavioli
and 63-k Ruth. These are (so far) in cassette form, but they're
carefully recorded by Tom using CD-quality D.A.T. equipment. He does
a masterful job... in my opinion.
There are probably many list members who aren't aware of Tom's
'catalog'... which I'd like to see listed here. :)
Also, I'd like to mention to Marc (and others) who attempt to record
these instruments that I believe it is possible to overdo the miking.
In other words, I think two mics, placed fairly close together (much as
the early stereo binaural recordings) produce the most accurate sonic
record of the sound of these instruments. Just my opinion, of
course. : ) I like 'live' recordings .. not mixer manipulated ones.
Perhaps Tom would be kind enough to elaborate on his techniques??
