Mechanical Monkeys; Paper Mache Music Boxes
By Marvin Paule
I'm sure you get this question all the time. Where can one find a
music box such as the one used as a prop in the Andrew Lloyd Webber
musical 'The Phantom of the Opera' ? It is described as a papier-mache
music box in the shape of a barrel organ attached the figurine of a
monkey in Persian robes playing the cymbals. I understand this item
may have been created for the musical and is strictly a prop, not a
real working music box. But perhaps then again it is or it was modeled
after an actual real life one. If you don't have one, do you have any
information as to the history behind that type of figurine music box.
I think everyone recognizes that monkey playing the cymbals as a toy,
but who created it and what was the inspiration?
Sincerely,
Marvin Paule
