Introduction & Mechanical Music Terminology
By David Vanderhoofven

Greetings! I have been lurking on the list for a few weeks, and I
would like to introduce myself. My name is David Vanderhoofven, and
I am a Registered Piano Technician in Joplin, Missouri. I work full-
time servicing, tuning and repairing pianos. I own a Hardman Duo
console sized player and I am fascinated with player pianos. Perhaps
some day I will learn to work on player pianos.

There is a good book to explain the terminology of the parts of the
piano. it is called "Piano Parts and Their Functions", compiled by
Merle Mason. This 100-page book is full of diagrams of piano case and
action parts with a listing of the names of the parts. The back of the
book is a glossary (about 30 pages) defining the terminology currently
in use. This book is invaluable if you work on piano, either as a
business or a hobby.

Piano Parts and Their Functions is available from:

  The Piano Technicians Guild
  3930 Washington
  Kansas City, MO 64111-2963
  816-753-7747
  Fax: 816-531-0070

The cost is $24.00 plus shipping and handling.

Sincerely,
David A. Vanderhoofven, RPT

[ Welcome to MMD, David. Please jump into the discussions and tell
[ us your philosophy about piano maintenance and rebuilding. Thanks
[ for the tip on the book -- I don't think it's been mentioned here
 [ before. -- Robbie
