I would like to put my two cents into the discussion of sealing leather
pouches. If I were to have to perform such an operation I would bend
towards the silicone solution. The suggested method of thinning rubber
cement is, in my opinion, a poor method. I only base this conclusion
on the experience I have had using rubber cement (office grade) to glue
paper together. When I go back into my files after a year or two, the
rubber cement has dried out, turned dark brown, and is completely
deteriorated. The paper releases from its backing due to these
problems.
I suggest anyone thinking of using office-type rubber cement try an
experiment first. Simply glue two papers together, along with coating
some pouch leather, then put them away to be check in a year. Start
now, so we can put this rubber cement idea to rest ASAP.
By the way, I do remember, a while back, someone mentioning the fact
that he uses a better grade of rubber cement. I think he mentioned
that it was similar to the type used by shoe repairers. Well, if that
is the solution, then fine. If anyone uses that type of rubber cement,
would you be kind enough to perform the above experiment. Then report
on the results in a year. But in the meanwhile, throw away those
bottles of Carter's Rubber Cement.
Thanks
