Cleaning Dry Powder From the Piano Strings
By Eddie Fulmer

I wrote several editions ago [MMD 980812] about our church piano that
was sprayed with an ABC dry powder fire extinguisher. I don't know
what the "tech" cleaned it with but I could still see powder around
the hitch pins and agraffes.

Upon playing the piano my wife complained about the tone which, upon
inspection, was directly connected with the bass strings. They were
as dead as I have ever heard. Powder was still visible in the string
windings.

Bass strings and tuning pins were removed and we are waiting for
replacement. Now the rest of the strings are rusting at a rapid rate.
They are going to be replaced also. The sound board was scratched up
pretty bad under the bass strings and I'm wondering whether it will
happen under the treble as well.

Our clean up job was handled by a service company, who hired the tech,
I was out of town and was unable to take care of the piano as soon as
it needed it. I didn't want to get in the way but now I almost feel
I must. This is a Kawai baby grand we have had for a while. Repair
cost now is at $2600?? Any thoughts?
