The MMD Website is sporting three improvements:
First, the file names of the archived Digests on the FTP site have been
changed to have a ".txt" suffix. Some people had complained that when
downloading the Digests via FTP that their browser tried to save the
file rather than display it. The ".txt" suffix should fix that. Those
interested in checking this out should visit
http://mmd.foxtail.com/digest-index-98q3.html
and pick a Digest.
Second, the "Indexed Archives" have been brought up to date through
22-Aug-98.
Third, and I think most important, Bob Fitterman has been "improving"
the program that generates the index. There's now a link at the bottom
of each Digest Table of Contents which allows the entire Digest to be
downloaded from the FTP site. For an example, try:
http://mmd.foxtail.com/Archives/Digests/199808/1998.08.06.html
and click the "Download Entire Digest" link in the "Navigation" section
at the bottom of the page. Of course you'd probably never _TYPE_ the
URL above except for a test. More likely you would start on the main
archive page:
http://mmd.foxtail.com/Archives/
and then, for instance
Click on "Keyword Index" link
then
Click on the "F" link
then
Click on the "Fats" link
then
Click on the "1998.08.06.11 FS: Fats Waller Record..." link.
That gets you to an article from that Digest. If you then decided
you wanted to see the rest of the Digest, you'd click on the "Contents"
link and from there the "Download Entire Digest" link.
Reading this probably sounds very complicated, but it is, in fact,
quite intuitive once you've tried it a couple of times.
There's an amazing number of "search engine" like features hidden
on these pages. I hope those of you that have web browsers will
try doing some browsing in the Archives.
Coming soon will be e-mail links to each author's current e-mail
address (with an anti-spam feature) so it will be easier for people
browsing to send private messages if they want to carry on a private
discussion about a previous message. This should be especially
helpful to new subscribers who are reviewing older articles.
My thanks again to Bob for all his help.
Jody
