Lyle Martin and the RX-9 Rolls
By Chuck Sorensen

Lyle Martin's RX-9 Project: Link Music for "88 Note" Players

Recently Robbie asked:

>[ Chuck, the tape recordings of the RX-9 project which I heard
>[ sounded very much like a Link piano, but they seemed to have more
>[ expression. Did Lyle Martin create a special expression/reproducer
>[ system for this set of rolls? Who is Ray Deyo?

Eight Link roll attributes were encoded on the RX-9 rolls, including
accentuation, soft pedal, and sustaining pedal.

Lyle used a slightly modified Ampico A piano with the three controls
mentioned for his recordings. An accentuation perforation resulted in
a quick increase of the "suction" intensity in the wind chest that
draws on the note striking pneumatics just preceding the sounding of
the related notes.

Ray Deyo was a long-time arranger of Link popular music rolls; his
distinctive style included not restating verbatim entire passages of
music within a tune.

I will pass any MMD messages for Lyle along to him.

Take Care --

Chuck Sorensen
