In response to Peter Coggins' inquiry how to remove the silver backing
from a mirror...
Try using a weak solution (5-10%) of nitric acid. I don't know the
dimensions of the mirror in question, but immersion of the mirror in
the acidic bath is recommended. One could fabricate a temporary tray
by constructing a wooden framework of 2 X 4's and then drape heavy
guage plastic sheeting over and into the frame to provide a shallow
tub for the soak process.
Exercise all precautions when working with acid - wear protective
goggles, clothing and gloves. Remember the cardinal rule of chemistry:
when mixing, always add the acid to water - NEVER add water to acid!
