"Wellington's Victory" by Beethoven
By John Phillips

I attended a concert in Hobart some years ago during which our local
symphony orchestra played this piece. They had about twenty members
of the local Citizens' Military Force (weekend soldiers) dressed up in
the appropriate French and English uniforms.

As the piece progressed they fired muskets (with blanks) across the
stage at each other, perhaps in time to the music. From time to time a
soldier would fall down, never to arise again. At the end of the music
no Frenchman were left standing and perfidious Albion had won the day.

It was quite silly and good fun. I'd be glad to see it again, maybe
once every ten years.

John Phillips in Hobart, Tasmania.
