Ampico B Roll Drive Motor
By Bob Taylor
Terry Smythe's concern about the tempo lever becoming warm is shared
by many. Robbie's comment about no venting is only part of the story.
The fact that the tempo lever becomes warm is a very good sign. It
indicates that the resistor in the governor mechanism has not burned
out -- yet.
In normal operation, this resistor is placed in series with the
line to the motor. The governor points close to bypass the resistor.
Most original resistors burn out. The motor still operates, but
the governor action is rough and the points will become very pitted
in time.
When it is necessary to replace the governor resistor, I suggest using
Mallory 200 HJ. (I am recalling from memory this number and it could
be wrong. I do have it written down somewhere if someone really needs
to know.) It will fit in the space and provide correct electrical
properties. I've used dozens of them without problems.
Happiness is a warm lever.

[ Terry Smythe just told me that the adjustable resistor in his piano
[ (the one in the box mounted on the rim of the piano) emits smoke
[ when it is connected, and so it's been disabled for a long time.
[ I think he has a combination of several problems! Could you please
[ tell us more about the replacement parts which you have successfully
[ installed, Bob? We need part numbers for both the big external power
[ resistor and the governor resistor. How do you replace the points
[ of the governor? -- Robbie
