Wayne Stahnke's new CD recording of nineteen Rachmaninoff Ampico rolls
has just been released. Rush out and buy it! This quite remarkable
piece of work will impress and astonish even the most committed
reproducing piano enthusiast.
On listening to it, there is a feeling that the full subtlety of
expression and musicianship embodied in those rolls has lain dormant
for the seventy-odd years and at last been set free. The quality of
performance and reproduction is quite staggering.
What a remarkable person Mr. Stahnke is. First he invents the Boesen-
dorfer SE recording and reproducing piano, then he leads the world in
the development of roll scanning technology. Not content to combine
those two achievements and rest on his laurels, he then has to be
thrice crowned by turning recording producer and giving us what is,
without a shadow of doubt, the finest recording of reproducing piano
music of all time.
Congratulations Wayne.
