Remond Duwyn, Organbuilder
By Jan Kees de Ruijter

Here is some information about the firm of Remond Duwyn of Belgium.

Remond Duwyn was born in Geraardsbergen in 1871. He started working in
Charleroi with a firm which built church organs. Around 1900 he started
working at the Mortier factory in Antwerp until 1906. He moved to the
Daneels factory, and still later to Joseph Bursens until 1914, when he
started his own business in Wilrijk (part of Antwerp). After the first
world war his two sons Henri and Ernest joined him.

There were another five people working there. They built mainly dance
organs. Remond was the man who made and voiced the pipes. Around 1922
he had to leave the building and moved to Laeken (part of Brussels),
where he started making orchestrions. The address was Boulevard Emiel
Bockstal 414.

Around 1933 the business was over and he started making rusian
[Russian?] billiards; only a few of these were made. Remond Duwyn
became ill and died on July 14, 1936.

There are only a few Remond Duwyn organs left. One 84-key orchestrion
in Belgium still survives, and an 89-key Dance organ in England. Some
organs were dismantled and used as street organs in Holland.

[ Thank you, Jan Kees. I heard the Duwyn orchestrion now owned by
[ Frank and Shirley Nix in Los Angeles. All the listeners said that
[ it has a lovely sound which brings visions of a nice restaurant !
