On a trip to Atlanta last week to visit relatives, I got in touch with
fellow MMD-er Tim Baxter, who graciously invited me to visit his
beautiful home and initiated me into the mysteries of MIDI files.
I played my complete repertoire of Gottschalk pieces (two of them)
on Tim's MIDI keyboard, he then put these performance files on his
computer screen and tweaked them to look exactly like a piano roll,
and we did some preliminary editing of the files.
What a thrill to see and hear my own performance and be able to bleep
out my mistakes! Tim and I plan to collaborate on finishing the
editing and eventually have a roll cut from the MIDI files, to be
issued by Tim's company, Meliora Rolls.
I'm a big Gottschalk fan, and Tim was kind enough to play his recently
completed and soon-to-be released roll of "Radieuse - Grand Valse de
Concert" -- a really exciting four-hand roll with a lot of gusto.
I've been reading about MIDI for years on the MMD and thought I under-
stood it, at least vaguely, but this hands-on experience finally made
it clear. I'm grateful to Tim for his generosity with his time and
knowledge.
