Poppers Orchestrion at Stuttgart Airport
By Jon Miller

One must be forever vigilant and have open eyes. Last week I was at
the airport in Stuttgart. Having just seen to the checking-in of a
group of 25 people, I headed for the bar/restaurant on the second
floor. I was sitting there enjoying a nice Pils when my traveling
companion pointed out an object and suggested it looked an awful lot
like an orchestrion. I'd looked at it, but it didn't click!

Our waitress noted our interest in it and could hardly find the keys for
it fast enough. She insisted on showing it to us, including the inside.

She also "insisted" that we listen to it. (Who were we to say no?
<grin>) I'm not sure who enjoyed it more -- the waitress or us!
She really enjoyed the opportunity to show it off.

The unit is a Poppers Welt-Piano "Konzertist", apparently supplied
by Pianohaus Carl Strasser, Stuttgart. It was in relatively good
condition, although it did not seem to be totally tight. It's probably
not worth a special trip, but worth looking at if at the airport.

It is located in the terminal which Delta departs from -- I believe
it's terminal 1. There is a balcony above the departure level which
is where the Red Baron bar and restaurant is located.
