Printing Lyrics on Music Rolls
By Richard Brandle
The HP1120C family of printers could be used to print lyrics on rolls.
It is an inexpensive ($500 retail), relatively fast (6 pages per minute)
wide carriage ink jet and the droplet metering technology is very
precise. Previous ink jets I've tried delivered too much ink onto
the roll paper and required several minutes to dry which resulted in
smearing as the paper exited the printer.
In a recent test with an 1120Cse, roll paper used by the Tonnesens came
out sufficiently dry to be casually handled and was completely dry in
about 15 to 30 seconds. If less than 100% black lettering were used,
I would expect the dry time to be reduced further. The ink used in
printer is still water soluble and will smear if the roll becomes wet.
But the output quality is excellent and can easily print lyrics and
graphics. Paper tracking over a long roll was not tested -- only the
ink/paper dry time.
