Hi Dawn,
There were an incredible number of cigarette related articles made with
music. Yours sounds like an early 20th century type, probably German,
and most likely does play 2 tunes. I have made an entire novelty
collection of smoking related musical objects. One of the silliest is
the Knight in Armor cigarette lighter that plays "When Irish Eyes are
Smiling!" Or the lady's cigarette case that plays the hymn "Amazing
Grace." I'm giving a workshop at the Musical Box Society Annual meeting
(Charlotte, NC - Sept. 1-6) on Musical Gadgets and Gismos. These are
the marvelous things that are readily found , don't cost the mint and
are such fun. Musical toys, lady's accessories, oddities with music
boxes. They are all part of mechanical music, and are great fun to
search for and a whole lot more likely to find at your local mall than
a nickelodeon or interchangeable cylinder music box. Besides, they are
not so painful on the wallet.
You really would enjoy membership in the Musical Box Society - our
publications frequently have articles about these novelty musical
collectibles. And many open houses have an assortment of small items
to view and listen to. Please let me know if you would like an
application. Be glad to oblige!
