Original Subject: I'm Back, with a Little Info. & A Question!
Hi All!
To start, thanks for all of the great reading from MMD! It is nice
to see more people talking about music boxes! I wish that I could give a
little more input, but I know little about the history of them. My
collection consists of about 230 small pieces (over half of them are
modern novelty type) and right now, they are in storage at my parents'
house :( So... the question that I have is based on what I recall
without seeing this certain music box for a while. It is a basic wooden
square box, 6-8 inches, when opened, it displays three "shelves" with
grooves. My assumption is that it was used to house cigarettes, because
of the size of the grooves. I have no idea of what tunes it plays (I
believe it plays two). If anyone knows if my assumption is correct or
not please let me know, I'd love to find out more about this particular
piece.
Now for a little bit of info. One of the few books that I have found
about music boxes is entitled MUSIC BOXES, THE COLLECTORS GUIDE....(it's
a long title) by Gilbert Bahl. It has alot of info about the history
and restoration of music boxes. I think it's a very helpful, as well
as MMD of course! :)
Someone in a previous MMD had mentioned The San Fransisco Music Box
Co. If you subscribe to the catalogue, there are several music boxes to
choose from in which you can select your own tunes for it to play. I'm
mentioning this because alot of the tunes listed to choose from are
familiar tunes from The "Phantom of the Opera"- including Masqurade (last
time I knew). I have a small porcelain "dish" with the phantom logo on
the top which plays that tune in my collection (it isn't one of the
personalized ones that I just mentioned).
It would be nice to hear some feedback either here on MMD or you can
feel free to E-mail me at Bigtoast@eznet.net
Thanks everyone!
Sincerely,
Dawn Hermenet
