Recently, I submitted a question to the MMD concerning the monkey music
box used in "Phantom of the Opera." I was very disappointed that there
was no response, especially since my question was in response to a plea
for more discussion about music boxes.
When you take into account the number of theatrical companies who are
presenting "Phantom of the Opera" worldwide, the monkey music box is
seen and heard by thousands of people each day -- even if it is only a
prop. I'm stunned that there is little interest in it.
Maybe more specific questions will generate some answers:
- Did the monkey music box appear in earlier "Phantom of the Opera"
films or in the novel by Gaston Leroux? In the information I've found,
the music box did not appear.
- Why did Andrew Lloyd Webber include the music box in his version of
the story?
- How was the design of the monkey music box chosen? What research
was done? Was it based on an actual music box?
- The music box plays the song "Masquerade." Are there any music
boxes currently on the market that play the song?
Now let's hear it from the music box people!
