Hello MMD readers, For the past 16 years most of our Artcraft
Music Rolls -- 88-Note and reproducing editions -- have featured
a rubber stamp which begins, "Are you on the Artcraft mailing list?"
(The message then suggests that the Pianolist write or 'phone us
in order to receive 'periodic mailings'.)
A few days ago we retired this stamp and replaced it with three
new ones, all related to the Internet.
Since our elaborate catalogues and brochures are no longer being
printed and mailed out, it seemed logical to stress our "Internet
catalogue" and Web services instead. (Note: The folding brochures
and small flyers will continue to be published, but the days of our
mass-mailing efforts -- and 24-page catalogues -- have ended, due
to the avalanche of web site activity these days.)
The major stamp announces the Artcraft web site, which is
"http://www.wiscasset.net/artcraft/" -- and the 2 others announce 'The
Pianola News' and/or provide our E-Mail address at <wiscasset.net>.
Somehow it seemed logical to mention this subtle change in the MMD,
another of today's Internet avenues of Player-Piano communications.
There's something odd about hand-stamping URL's and Internet codes
on perforated music rolls, but then, cutting master rolls from musical
analysis (using open-reel tape recordings) was a breakthrough when
I started experimenting with that concept back in the early 'Fifties.
(Audio recordings -- not sheet music notation standards -- have been
at the heart of most of my work since that time.)
So, if you see our new URL announcement replacing the familiar "mailing
list" stamp on the Artcraft roll leader, you're obviously playing a
music roll from the Summer of '98 -- or afterwards!
Regards from Maine,
Douglas Henderson
