Modern Reproducer Pickup for Edison Disks
By Spencer Chase
You can play Edison records with a variety of "modern" cartridges on
a variety of 78 RPM (actually it should be 80 RPM for Edison records)
turntables.
You can use a magnetic stereo cartridge by connecting the two channels
"out of phase" in parallel. For a stylus you would need something
between a "78" stylus and a microgroove. A diamond transcription
stylus would work. I don't remember exactly, but I think it should be
from 1 to 2 mils. I think a "78" stylus is normally 3 mils and a
microgroove is under 1 mil.
Of course you can also use a mono cartridge if you can find one. You
would have to play around with equalizations to match the response of
an acoustic system. If you don't have a 78 RPM turntable, you can
adapt many of the types that use a DC servo motor by changing the drive
voltage. You can also play around with pulley ratios.
