Player Controlled From 1,500 Miles Away via Net
By Gabe Della Fave
Andy Taylor and I did a most remarkable thing this week. I think we may
have been among the first to do so. I was able to "mount and play a
roll" on Andy Taylor's player piano from 1,500 miles away! I found this
quite remarkable and had to brag about it to my friends and coworkers.
Let me explain. I am fairly Internet savvy and Andy is too. In addition,
Andy has Pianomation MIDI on his player piano and found a means to play
public domain MIDI files which I sent to him through his IRC (Internet
Relay Chat) channel. I found it just amazing that my files were
controlling his player piano which is so far away from me.
Andy has several MIDI files available for download from his IRC channel
and you are also able to upload files to share with other folk
interested in mechanical musical instruments; and you can chat with
other interested people too!
If you would like to visit Andy's IRC room, you will need some sort of
IRC software such as mIRC or Orbit and then link to any Starlink server.
Then open the channel by typing the IRC command: /join #player-piano
I have had a lot of fun here and have learned quite a bit too.
Hope you enjoy his channel. It has been an eye-opener for me.
