Maximum Notes-Per-Second on Piano Roll
By Tim Baxter

Dear MMDers: Thanks for all the helpful responses to my last query
about Duo-Art coding. Here's one for the player techs (but perhaps
also for roll manufacturers):

What is the fastest number of repetitions a single note should be
capable of on a well-regulated, properly functioning player piano?
Stated another way, how fast should a single note be able to repeat?
Three notes per second? More?

I realize the answer will differ based on how many notes are also
occurring on the tracker bar at the same time (i.e., suction is being
drawn off for these other notes), but imagine my query to posit
repetition rates for just the one note.

The query should also suppose pianos of all makes and models, i.e.,
the least common denominator one should account for in coding rolls --
"Tim, you cannot code a roll where the repetition exceeds ____ because
some pianos won't handle it" -- but I would appreciate knowing whether
any of the major models of reproducing pianos (Duo-Art, Ampico, Welte)
are better in this regard.

Thanks,

Tim Baxter
