Mechanical Music in the Movies
By Mark Forer

Just saw "God's Gift to Women" (Warner Bros., "31), part of TCM's
tribute to Louise Brooks, starring Frank Fay, Joan Blondell, Laura
LaPlante and Louise Brooks. In it, there's an extended scene of a
Duo-Art grand playing a classical piece, with Laura LaPlante sitting at
the keyboard, pretending to be playing (this movie screens again in
June).

Also, I forgot to mention in my last e-mail the scenes in "Honky Tonk
Man" where Clint Eastwood hand-plays a mint Seeburg E with xylophone in
the parlor of a "fancy house". The scene is also reproduced on the back
of the VHS box.
