What Are We Here For?
By John Farrell

Before this ridiculous software vs. hardware thing gets out of hand may
we please have a cease-fire? I was certainly not suggesting that MMD
should be ethnically cleansed of all material relating to rebuilding,
repair and other technical/theoretical matter -- the purpose of my
original posting was to bewail the fact that there is very little
musical discussion within the group.

I agree wholeheartedly with Harvey Chao and Matthew Caulfield, whose
eloquent notes yesterday stressed that the varied interests of the
group are inextricably intertwined. Also I am grateful to Karl Ellison
for identifying some web sites which might satisfy my craving for piano
music.

In the meantime if I can't discuss the music I love then I shall
continue to read, with interest and tolerance, about the most effective
way to rid my piano of mousey smells -- my cat has got to go.

John Farrell

[ I'm happy to discuss music, and here's a fine question for you,
[ John: What's the secret for making a music roll sound like Fats
[ Waller, or Otis Spann, or Max Kortlander or Rudy Erlebach?
 [
[ How does one adapt a band arrangement to make jolly music on
[ a street organ? Or concert music on a concert orchestrion
 [ or a music box?
 [
[ Musical sounds are the crucial end product of a fine mechanical
[ musical instrument, and creating the musical arrangements
[ certainly deserves discussion in MMD ! -- Robbie
