Okay! Although my interest is in mechanical organettes and reed
organs, I went and did it. While shopping at a local mall, I couldn't
pass up this bargain:
It's a small 5 1/4 x 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 Swiss manufacture music box. The
box is veneered in bird's-eye maple on the sides, the top is inlaid
with a rectangular 3-D box pattern using light and dark wood and metal,
about the color of pewter.
The bottom key-wind movement is identical to that pictured in Bower's
p. 70 at the top, but with 3 airs, 41 teeth. The tunes are "The man
behind the gun, March", "Florodora, Waltz", "The little Alabama coon",
according to the tune card.
The tune card is numbered 5071. It has a logo in a circle "Qualite'
Excelsior" with an inner triangle and "U", and is imprinted
"Manufactured in Switzerland". The same logo (without the "U") is
stamped into the bedplate; also the number 83630.
All appears original with the exception of the spring on the governor
stop mechanism. The knob which should operate the stop is missing.
Now, here's where I need help:
1) Anybody out there able to give me a date of manufacture and maker?
I know it was a cheap design, but I'm still curious. What other
information would help identify it?
2) How do I go about replacing the stop knob? Can replacements be
found, or do I machine it? I'm not even certain how the mechanism
attaches/works. Can someone give me a detailed explanation?
I'm new to this "music box" stuff, having vowed to save my money for
organettes. But since it was right there in front of me ...
So thanks to anyone who provides ANY helpful information!
