Wurlitzer Style 164 Military Band Organ
By Jim Kenney

The Wurlitzer Style 164 Military Band Organ uses Style 165 rolls and is
larger than the 165 organ. The 165 organ has 256 wooden pipes, but the
164 has only 252 wooden pipes but an additional 64 brass pipes, making
it a true military band organ. There were only three of the 164's made,
and only one still exists.

It has 22 bells, a cymbal, a crash cymbal, snare drum, bass drum, wood
block, triangle, and a timpani drum setup working off the bass drum.
A style 164 is pictured on page 939 of the Bowers "Encyclopedia of
Automatic Musical Instruments".

Also, here is a picture of me and the owner in New York City, back
in 1976. I'm the little kid! This organ was owned by Paul Torin of
New Jersey, then moved to New York, then he sold the organ and most
of his collection and now he resides in Sarasota FL. He had the organ
completely restored in, I think, 1981 and yes, it was quite loud. My
ears would ring for a day or two after hearing it because I was to
stupid to not stand right in front of it for an hour or two!!
