Hello. My name is Johnny Lite, and have enjoyed reading various posts
on MMD, especially those concerning MIDI, and copyright issues.
I have several Biograph records and CDs of Eubie Blake blues-rags,
recorded from rolls owned by Mike Montgomery. According to the liner
notes, written by Mike Montgomery, these rolls are rare. The music
style is different from Eubie's solo rag style and published sheet
music (Chevy Chase, Fizz Water, etc.).
I wrote Montgomery with the (outlandish) request that he loan or rent
me his rolls so I could have them scanned (by Wayne Stahnke, member of
this list) and converted to MIDI files. So far, if he got my letter,
Mike has chosen not to reply.
The titles I'm talking about are: Dangerous Blues, by Billie Brown
(on CD, Memories of You); Crazy Blues, (on CD, Memories of You), and
Broadway Blues, by Perry Bradford; Home Again Blues, by Harry Akst
(with Home Sweet Home theme by Berlin).
My goal is to learn to play these pieces. I have learned a little
directly from the CD, by ear. But these are three-hand arrangements,
often heavy with tremolo, and this makes them even harder to learn
(for me, anyway).
Does anyone know of another source for these rolls? Or know of any
sheet music for the songs? If not, then does anyone familiar with
these songs know of similar material, by any artist?
Send email direct or through MMD. Thanks for any responses, and
thanks to the excellent MMD management.
