Fixing Water Spots on Wood Finish
By Don Teach
A with watermark on a finish is usually an indicator that someone has
applied a furniture polish to the finish. Moisture is trapped by the
furniture polish and shows as a cloudy white mark.
There are different chemicals to remove furniture polish buildup. I
would probably not use any of them on an antique music box.
I would try a polishing compound, 3M Final Glaze (available at auto
refinishing stores), to remove the furniture polish. The polishing
compound will also leave a nice appearance.
On grand pianos in the shop we use OOOO steel wool with soapy water
rubbing with the grain. We use no furniture polish. If you do use
furniture polish then make very sure that it does NOT contain silicones
as they are a nightmare.
So this is my opinion and now on to the question of the day --
How many of you reading this use furniture polish? How many of you
are professional refinishers? Has anyone ever seen furniture polish in
a factory that produces products with furniture finishes?
