Cary Grant as Piano Tuner
By Roger Waring
Hi all. I recently saw a film called "None but the Lonely Heart"
made in 1944. Did anyone else catch it?
It stars Cary Grant as a rough and ready piano tuner cum clock repairer
cum small-time hood. His Ma is a dodgy pawn shop owner who wants him
to take over from her. He is more interested in women and generally
getting into trouble, but is also supremely confident in his tuning
ability - and of course he claims to have perfect pitch.
He pulls the plug on an electric player because it "is out of tune".
Sitting in a cafe with his dame he strikes the teapot with a spoon and
declares the pot to be pitched at G-Sharp.
But the real beauty comes near the end of the film, when he ends up
with two mobsters in a car being chased by police. Inevitably the
baddies crash and their car catches fire. Grant escapes just before
the gas tank explodes and stands watching as one hood perishes in the
inferno.
All this time the car horn is jammed on, wailing its monotone lament.
The camera closes in on Grant's face to seek his agonised reactions.
With impeccably sardonic humour he shakes his head and declares
solemnly: "E-Flat".
