A century ago, the player piano was the newest, wiz-bang, technological
wonder of its day. When you think of it, it is pretty amazing that a
piece of paper with holes in it can make music. And, more amazing yet,
they are still making piano rolls at the QRS Piano Roll factory in
Buffalo, New York.
There, they use machines that look like the dream of some mad
scientist, full of pneumatic tubes and belts and pulleys that wheeze
and rattle a bit, but that are nearly as reliable as the day they were
made.
Two and a half million piano rolls were made between the turn of the
century and the Depression. Production resumed in the 1950's and there
may have been a couple hundred thousand since then. But the people in
Buffalo, New York have no idea how many old ones are up and around.
What they _do_ know is that there are about 70,000 people on their
mailing list, so the popularity of the piano roll has not diminished
over the years.
Sunday Morning's Charles Osgood visits the QRS Piano Roll Factory and
reminisces of times past before computers made things a little easier.
And, he had time to play some tunes of his own.
