Piano Harps and "Stop-Drilling"
By Mike Haydon

Hello: This is just a curiosity question. I know that church bell
manufacturers can recover a cracked bell by "stop-drilling", that is,
drilling a hole at the end of the crack so as to increase the area upon
which stress was applied, and thus "stop" the crack from propagating
further.

I understand that a piano harp is under several tons of stress, but
might this technique, perhaps in combination with lower the tuning a
step or so lower, rescue a piano that is otherwise "felt and
firewood?"
