Refrigerants
By Jeffrey Borinsky

That was a great story about the exploding fridge.

I did not know that sulphur dioxide (very different to sulfur dioxide
<grin>) was ever used as a refrigerant. Anyway SO2 would give you a
shower of sulphurous acid; for rotten eggs you need hydrogen sulphide
(H2S).

Be thankful that the refrigerant was not ammonia or butane, both of
which have been widely used.

Jeffrey Borinsky

[ Sulfur or sulphur, it still stinks! Ammonia is still used in
[ commercial freezer plants; I wonder why SO2 was favored in smaller
 [ refrigerators? -- Robbie
