Drill Bit For Tapered Holes
By Dave Clark

Philip Jamison asks:

> Also, may I ask if a special bit exists for drilling tapered holes

I would like to know the answer to this question as well. I have
mentioned here before that I am making a 28 key street organ. I made a
tapered wooden dowel on the lathe and glued sandpaper to it. I then
put a wood screw in the end, cut the head off and then chucked it into
the drill press. This is very crude and you need to change the paper
frequently but it does work.

If the foot doesn't match the taper of my jig then you don't get a
very good fit. I was thinking about taking the foot itself and gluing
sandpaper to hit for the "final" bit. This would ensure the correct
taper. I'm probably being way more fussy than required, but us wood-
working types hate wood joints that don't go together correctly. I am
looking forward to the thoughts that others may have on this subject.
