In MMD 980407 Fritz Gellerman asks if the "After Hours" on my piano
roll (JAM 149) is the same tune as that on his late lamented Erskine
Hawkins 78 rpm record. My source material for the roll was the
composition by James P. Johnson; the sheet music was published by
Jack Mills showing December 1923 as the copyright date.
The Erskine Hawkins 78 was recorded on 10 June 1940 and released on the
Bluebird label. Included in the 15-piece orchestra (nearly as large as
mine!) was Avery Parrish on piano, who according to Fritz is credited
as the composer.
As I have never heard the Hawkins record I have no way of knowing if
the two pieces are in fact one and the same. However if Fritz would
care to send me a tape of the piece on his CD I would be able to tell
him one way or the other. If they are identical I shall make his day
and see that he gets a copy of the piano roll.
