Hi All, This story was related to me by Richard Greisbach, a long time
friend and piano tuner/technician here in New Jersey:
Seeing an ad for a piano for $125.00, Richie went to take a look.
The unit was in excellent condition, nice case, reasonable action and
fairly well in tune. But, being a professional, he decided to take a
look at the bass bridge. Upon removing the bottom board, he (and the
owner, an elderly man) noticed two cloth bags approximately 10" tall
and 6" in diameter, on either side of the trapwork.
In a very loud voice, the elderly man exclaimed, "That's where she
put them!" "What?", Richie asked. The man replied, "Twenty thousand
dollars worth of gold and silver coins."
He grabbed them up and told Richie he could have the piano for free!
Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth. As for me, the most
valuable thing I've found was a 1909 VDB penny! (Not a SVBD)
Musically,
John A. Tuttle
