Seek Scales for Kalliope and Orphenion
By Christian Greinacher

Recently I got a wonderful Kalliope disc-type music box. It is exactly
the same as Bowers shows it on page 108, Kalliope No. 107, 82 teeth,
disc diameter 45 cm. The combs are not in excellent condition: some
teeth are broken. In the past I did some very successful replacement
of broken teeth on other music boxes, and I will do the same with
this Kalliope, but it's hard to find the exact tuning of the broken
teeth. Following is shown what I could find out by measuring the
existing teeth and what is missing (nomenclature: Nr. of teeth/ tuning
note with A = 440 Hz):

1/e-2; 2/e-2; 3/a-2; 4/a-2; 5/h-2; 6/cis-1; 7/d-1; 8/d-1; 9/dis-1;
10/e-1; 11/e-1; 12/fis-1; 13/broken; 14/a-1; 15/a-1; 16/h-1; 17/broken;
18/cis; 19/d; 20/e; 21/e; 22/fis; 23/broken; 24/gis; 25/a; 26/a;
27/broken; 28/cis1; 29/cis1; 30/d1; 31/dis1; 32/idle; 33/e1; 34/e1;
35/fis1; 36/fis1; 37/g1; 38/gis1; 39/gis1; 40/a1; 41/a1; 42/a1; 43/b1;
44/h1; 45/h1; 46/c2; 47/cis2; 48/cis2; 49/d2; 50/d2; 51/dis2; 52/e2;
53/e2; 54/e2; 55/f2; 56/fis2; 57/fis2; 58/g2; 59/idle; 60/gis2;
61/gis2; 62/a2; 63/a2; 64/h2; 65/h2; 66/c3; 67/cis3; 68/cis3; 69/d3;
70/d3; 71/dis3; 72/e3; 73/e3; 74/e3; 75/fis3; 76/fis3; 77/fis3;
78/gis3; 79/a3; 80/a3; 81/c4; 82/cis4.

Question: Can somebody tell me whether I did the correct measurement
and what should be the correct value for the broken teeth?

The similar problem I have with a wonderful playing Orphenion (Bowers
page 133, Orphenion No. 71, disc diameter 34,5 cm). Who can tell me the
correct scale for this instrument?
