My last trip to Mexico, I was presented with a hardbound book entitled
"Catalog of Metrostyle & Themodist Music for the Pianola and Pianola
Piano". All rolls are sixty-five note and the date is July 1910.
Written in the front is a message from my friend who gave it to me.
"Thanks for educating me so that I knew what this was when I found it
in a used book store." Stamped inside the cover, in Spanish, is this
sentence, and I translate: "Prices marked in this catalog are in
American gold. Prices in Mexican silver are double those shown."
The catalog runs 226 pages and most rolls have two numbers. The first
number is the regular Metrostyle roll, and the second listing simply
has a "T" in front of the first number to indicate that it has been
"especially prepared for use on Themodist instruments."
Pasted to the front page is a sticker which reads, "Names appearing in
parenthesis are those of artists who have furnished the Autograph
Metrostyle Interpretations of the Compositions." Some of the artists
listed include: Ferruccio Busoni, Cecile Chaminade, Maria Carreras,
Teresa Carreno, Harold Bauer, Wanda Landowska, Edward Elgar, and Arthur
Friedheim. There are seven pages of rolls with music composed by Franz
Liszt. Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy runs a close second.
Again, fascinating reading and a wonderful slice of roll history.
