A number of very sharp-eyed people noticed my reference to the
Seeburg KT special remark that I made in my posting on piano plates.
I mentioned that I had seen a plate at the Kelly foundry for the
reproductions that were being made. They have bombarded me with
questions about that undertaking.
Some of the members of the MMD were involved in that project and I
am only going to tell you what I know about it, which is very little.
Maybe those who played a part in the undertaking will enlighten us.
The project was first announced, as far as I know, in the Spring 1980
catalog of the Mechanical Music Center's catalog. They were, and may
still be for all I know, located in Darien, Connecticut. On page 21
of that catalog there is an announcement of the project and lots of
photos showing the progress of the building of these instruments.
I do not have the slightest idea how many were eventually built, but
the cost at the time is listed as $9,800.00 FOB Darien with three
"G" rolls.
I am sure some of the other members could enlighten us about that
project, as several of them are mentioned in that early catalog as
having contributed their time and skills. Another mention is made
in the Fall-Winter 1981 catalog. From what I read, they were built one
at a time, and you had to place a deposit and "get in line."
I have seen one of the reproductions, and it is spectacular. The
attention to detail is unbelievable and my experiences in building
a piano helped me to appreciate this wonderful undertaking.
