My thanks to the two supportive people, Norman Narmore, and Reg Smith,
who wrote me directly about my ongoing saga of the Paillard. After
much thought, I decided to turn the Paillard over to Robin Biggins to
fix the dampers, realign the tune changer, and realign the tune
changer, etc.
In the mean time I'll clean-up my Malignon that I got from Nancy Fratti
in 1996. The Malignon has a sweet, melodious almost heavenly sound.
There are very few Malignons around, but this one, if any measure of
the others, is beautiful -- even when dirty. There is an article by
Olin Tillotson on the Malignon in the Silver Anniversary Collection
book put out by the MBSI in 1974.
Robin did comment that the Paillard bedplate was extremely strong and
that the underside of the bedplate has ridges which would act like
supports for the bedplate which is about 38" to 40" long. Also, he
commented that the governor and winding lever (with its articulated arm
for ease of winding) were extremely well made and meant to last a long
time.
All the supporting hardware such as for the spring barrels and cylinder
support brackets are very strong and built for durability. It takes
two people, at least, to move the beast. The cabinet upon which it sits
has 10 drawers, each designed to hold 6 cylinders. That's all for now.
