Infringement of Melodies

As I recall from years ago the law has considered that more than seven
consecutive notes of identical music is a copyright violation.

I believe that was given in a ruling in the forties but I can't recall
the exact circumstances but I do recall distinctly that the ruling was
that up to seven notes of the same interval and tempo would be allowed
and anything beyond that was a violation of copyright.
