This is the most difficult piece of writing I have ever sent to MMD.
On Thursday, my brother-in-law, Jasper Vickroy, was killed when a tree,
loosened by rain-soaked ground, fell on his car while he was at an
intersection in Berkeley, California. It's hard to believe that he is
gone and that he met his demise in such an absurd freak accident.
We're still in shock, trying to comprehend and cope with this tragedy.
Jasper was born in The Philippines and moved to the U.S. with his
family when he was a boy, and settled in the San Francisco Bay area.
After graduating from college, he joined the army and was stationed in
Washington, DC. My sister Connie was working in the DC area at the
time, and that is how they met. After Jasper was discharged from the
army, they moved from one coast to the other, and resettled in the Bay
area.
Although Jasper and my sister were from very different backgrounds,
they were a good match. They would have celebrated their 19th wedding
anniversary next month in March. They had one son, Kyle, who is 7.
I have no profound words for anyone reading this. I can only tell you
of the tremendous grief over the loss of someone close whose life was
cut short at the age of 47, and of the overwhelming inconceivable
circumstances surrounding his death.
Thanks for listening.
