Hi Everybody and Rob DeLand, who started this thread. I have a ten-inch
J. L. (Mr. Piano Roll) Cook 78 rpm record I found in a heap in an
antique shop here in Tasmania several years ago. It is a DEC recording,
no. Y6514, pressed in Australia under license from the Columbia Record
Co. The two numbers on it are "Missouri Waltz" and "Let A Smile Be
Your Umbrella". It sounds like a piano roll with percussion backing and
to my ears is absolutely atrocious.
Rob, in your original note to MMD you wrote, "I junked a 78 last weekend
at a local flea market.". What did you mean by that? It sounds to me
as if you went armed with a hammer, determined to rid the world of
horrible old recordings, but maybe that's too lurid an interpretation?
Anyway, Rob, if you would like this record you are welcome to it, if
I can get it to you without damage. Then you can do what you like with
it.
