In last Saturday's MMD Dan Wilson wrote about Empeco rolls:
Hey, John ! When I visited you away back, I had a good look at these
as they're unknown in England (the ordinary themed "SM" rolls made in
Germany being the equivalent here) and they do have very sparse dynamic
perforations along the edges. Have another look !
Well, yesterday was a public holiday here, so I took the time to have
a look at all 9 of my Empeco rolls and I can report that the expression
codings are very sparse indeed -- there aren't any! They are, as I
reported, themed 88n rolls with an expression line but no Metrostyle
line. Heh heh, I'm enjoying this, because it's very unusual for me to
be able to point out an error to Dan Wilson.
However I do have 3 Empeco expression rolls as well and they do have
sparse expression coding as well as being themed. The leaders, on
which the majority of the printing seems to be in Spanish or Italian,
are identical to the leaders on the straight themed 88n rolls. I can
see no way to tell whether one of these rolls has expression coding or
not except by unrolling it. Almost all the rolls have been rubber-
stamped in green ink at the start with a stern warning in German,
warning against infringing copyright by copying the rolls, and some of
them have a French royalty sticker on them too.
I have a fourth expression roll that seems to have the same coding but
it is of almost anonymous manufacture. The only clue is the word Amati
written into the border around the roll label -- the same label is on
the box and the leader.
If anybody is interested I could try to scan an Empeco leader and send
it in to MMD, but I won't unless actually asked to.
There have been one or two MMDers lately who have Empeco expression
pianos, or think they may have. I would be happy to swap these
expression rolls for something I can play.
