Residence Theater Player Pipe Organ
By Dick Beery

Greetings to all. I have been a member of MMD since its inception and
found it very informative and useful. As an aside I really miss several
of the people that used to submit excellent technical articles. I hope
they return soon.

The main reason for posting the following is my desire to learn more about
the various roll players available for pipe organs along with locating an
appropriate player/players.

Several people have asked me to post the details on my pipe organ project.
Therefore I am now ready to take the plunge and ask for help with my
residence theater organ . I am interested in the best approach to winding,
stop list recommendations, relay suggestions and any overall ideas. My
final goal is to have a theater organ that is Midi compatible and will
also play several types of player rolls(ideas and suggestions are also
appreciated in this area). I am currently a member of ATOS and have a
copy of the Shop Notes which I am reading. My background is in electrical
engineering and I have been rebuilding player pianos for the past 20 years
and have been running my own 70 person electronics firm for the past 25 years.

The organ is going to be installed in a music room I have built for
working on and displaying my player pianos. The room is separate from
my house and the basic dimensions are 25' x 50'. In one corner is a
15' x 10' greenhouse for my wife's gardening needs. The greenhouse is
completely isolated from having any air exchange with music area, but
there are lots of windows so you can enjoy the plants while listening
to the music. A 20' x 25' workshop is divided off of one end of the
building. This leaves an L shaped area that is 30' x 15' x 14' with
2 different sloped ceilings. There is also a balcony area above the
workshop that looks over the music area. My goal is to install the
pipe in the attic and balcony areas. It should also be noted that the
sloped ceilings have two different heights( 17' and 12'). I am not
sure how the acoustics will work out but it should be a fairly live
room.

The organ is as follows:

Three Oaks Theater Pipe Organ (18 Ranks)

The original instrument is an EM Skinner opus 492 with 9 ranks all on 5" wind:
