Amhurst Player With Dull Sound
By Roger Waring
Hi all..
I have just carried out some repairs to an Amhurst player
that has the legend Amhurst N.S. on the fall board.
The serial no 24312 is stamped on the pin block.
The player action looks like a single valve standard.
The piano has a fairly square case with a rich oak veneer.
It looks circa 1927 to me.
Can anyone advise as to its likely history?
Incidentally it performs very well.
One problem though is the sound of the bass strings, especially
the singles. The lower one progresses through the bass, the duller
and muddier the sound gets. The dampers are definitely not the cause.
The upper copper windings in the tenor area are OK and all of the steels
are fine, but the sound of the instrument suffers due to the lack
of clarity in the bass. Any ideas please?
Thanks to all.
