I found the problem. We just bought our Regina so we're learning! When
we first got it the pressure bar was a little out of line -- the latch
didn't drop down straight over the spindle. I figured the bar was
slightly bent, but rather than try to bend it back I decided the better
fix would be to adjust the spindle slightly in a front-to-rear direction
until it lined up with the latch. So far so good, but then I noticed the
bar wasn't parallel to the star wheel shaft, so I aligned both the
spindle and the pivot end until they were. After that I noticed some
notes, particularly bass notes, were missing from discs that had played
fine before. You probably guessed it by now, I checked the alignment of
a known good disc and the projections weren't centered over the star
wheels. I took care of that and now everything sounds fine. This turn of
events got me to thinking, so I tried the zinc disc again and it now
plays OK. It must have been punched slightly different from our steel
discs.
Apparently someone has worked on this in the past, as the screw heads
are somewhat chewed up. I question that the instrument ever had an
alignment problem, but sometime in the past a well-meaning individual
made it worse for lack of the right tools, or knowledge, or both. Is
this common? Just curious. I'm an incurable tinkerer, but if it's
working I leave it alone!
Is there such a thing as a special disc made for the sole purpose of
aligning these critical parts? I'm sure the pressure bar should be in a
certain spot, but I don't know what the "exact spot" is.
Best Regards,
Joel Hoshaw
