Regina Zinc Discs & Value of Refinishing
By Marty Roenigk

Joel Hoshaw inquired about why a solitary zinc disc does not play well
on his Regina while the steel and copper plated steel discs play fine.
We have occasionally had this problem, I think more due to the fact that
zinc wears much more rapidly than steel, and therefore there can be a
difference in the projection heights. This can be adjusted for by
adjusting the center post, however this should not be done - it is
better to play the discs that play well and try to trade off the other
disc(s). Adjusting is a delicate thing and should be done once and
left alone.

As to refinishing a music box, this should be avoided if at all
possible. A music box with a fine original finish is always going to
be worth more than a refinished example. However if the finish is
unsalvageable or detrimental to the appearance then go ahead and do a
professional refinishing, it will be worth somewhat less than a
pristine original case but will be worth more than the case with the
poor finish.
